Oridonin description

Oridonin, a compound derived from herbs such as _Isodon rubescens_ and _Rabdosia rubescens,_ has demonstrated anti-aging potential in skin care. Of note, its ability to help mitigate cellular senescence, a process linked to aging, suggests oridonin could theoretically enhance skin’s healthspan and longevity. However, it’s important to weigh the benefits against the risks. The risks? Oridonin’s volatile terpene compounds (i.e. fragrance) can potentially irritate skin, especially in sensitive skin individuals or when consistently used in high concentrations. This downside undermines the beneficial effects, though it should be noted current scientific literature is somewhat mixed in this regard. Some studies have shown oridonin to be skin soothing, while others highlight the possibility of irritation. While oridonin has been studied for various properties including wound healing and antioxidant effects, most of the evidence supporting the use of oridonin in skin care comes from in vitro studies and animal models. More robust human clinical trials are needed to definitively confirm its safety and efficacy in topical skin care products. Note: Oridonin is categorized as a skin-conditioning agent by the Personal Care Products Council and cosmetic suppliers. According to supplier-filed patent information, the use level of oridonin in cosmetics ranges from 0.001–3% (dry weight).
