This flowering plant produces yellow blooms and its oil has a fragrant scent characterized as sweet and herbaceous. Like most other volatile fragrant oils (AKA essential oils), blue tansy oil can cause sensitization and irritation. It contains many aromatic compounds, including sabinene, camphor and myrcene. Although jam-packed with fragrance-imparting compounds, blue tansy’s stand-out chemical component is chamazulene, a fragrant terpenoid that also serves as a colorant, lending formulas a natural blue hue. Chamazulene is a bit of a mixed bag. Although it’s a natural fragrant chemical compound, it’s also credited with soothing and protective abilities due to its antioxidant properties.
